The Audacity of Kindness

They called the man audacious

He walked with head cocked high

Where mortal feet were loath to tread

His steps were firm and spry

The folks in town all feared him

They thought him far too bold

What he lacked in social grace

He’d recompense with gold

One day they held an auction

For land the bank foreclosed

Cries rang out all through town square

In support of those deposed

Who dares to start the bidding?

The angry crowd stood mute

Who would dare to cast their lot

To gain such bitter fruit

The banker raised an angry fist

To solemn heads all bowed

His taunting rant was all they heard

Till voice boomed from the crowd

Stop your raves you greedy fool!

I’ll pay the note and more

The wealthy man with head held high

Stood to settle up the score

The village folks shook their heads

None tried to hide disdain

This haughty man with cold black heart

Other’s misery is his gain

Come with me and sign the deed

The banker said with relish

This street is full of common raff

The summer’s heat is hellish

The proud man just shook his head

And firmly stood his ground

No need for that he calmly said

No home will I impound

The family’s debt is paid in full

The deed you now will render

To the clan what owns the land

No thanks to vengeful lender

Town folk cheered and swelled with pride

Struck by his act of daring

The boastful man with head held high

Now known for truly caring
