Song for a Lone Star

Southern star, largest in our sky

Glowing like an orange ember

Laser light’s ruthless trace

Gaping chasm where dreams fall free

Proud Republic, solitary strength

Twinkling, teasing, taunting foe

No match for lesser souls

Searing image burned in cold stone

Tiny island, under southern star

Gasping breath of tidal surf

Salty tears foam the shore

Grains of time mark love’s eroding

Easter star, hung in lesser light

Pining like a wounded wolf

Blood oozing from torn flesh

Howling grief under a waning moon

Southern star, guide my journey

Light my halting steps t’ward home

Restore my eye’s last twinkle

Open wide the western skyline
